New Washington, Aklan- The DENR-PENRO Aklanโheaded by PENR Officer Engr. Jurlie D. Zubiagaโthrough its Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Unit (PAMBCU) and a group of volunteers (LGU New Washington and Aklan Trekkers), recently visited the wetlands of Batan and New Washington for the annual Asian Waterbird Census (AWC).
This yearโs census documented a total of 37 bird species with a combined count of 892 individuals, encompassing both migratory and resident species.
Despite the challenging weather conditions, the team identified a diverse range of waterbirds, highlighting the ecological importance of Aklanโs wetlands. Key species documented include: Black-crowned Night Heron, Purple Heron, Javan Pond Heron, Little Egret, Philippine Duck, Wandering Whistling Duck, Black-winged Stilt, Whiskered Tern, Common Sandpiper, and the Brahminy Kite.
The survey also noted various local species such as the Visayan Tailorbird, Philippine Magpie-Robin, and White Collared Kingfisher.
The AWC promotes wetland and waterbird conservation globally, following a citizen-science approach to raise awareness and sustainable action.
