Tangalan, Aklan- The Philippine National Police-Maritime Group intensified its campaign against illegal fishing following a seaborne patrol operation on April 15, 2026 in the waters off Tangalan, Aklan, which led to the interception of five fishing boats operating without the required permits and local government documents, in violation of Republic Act 8550 or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998, as amended by RA 10654.

Five individuals were taken into custody, while the fishing vessels, equipment, and catch valued at approximately PhP2,156,000.00 were confiscated and documented for proper disposition. The boats were found engaged in unauthorized fishing activities within municipal waters.

The operation forms part of the PNP Focused Agenda under Enhanced Managing Police Operations, in support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen protection of the country’s marine resources and coastal communities.

PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., underscored the importance of sustained maritime operations, stressing that the campaign is not only about enforcement but also about safeguarding the country’s future food security.

“Hindi natin palalampasin ang mga lumalabag sa ating batas sa karagatan. This is about protecting our fisherfolk and ensuring that our marine resources are preserved for the next generation,” PGen Nartatez said.

The PNP Maritime Group reiterated that operations against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing will continue nationwide as part of ongoing efforts to protect marine ecosystems and support legitimate fishing communities.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader drive for environmental protection and sustainable livelihood, advancing the goal of “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman” through consistent and visible law enforcement at sea.
