Boracay Island, Aklan—The Commission on Elections (COMELEC-Aklan) has announced that it is allowing the sale of liquor on this resort island on condition that it is only served to foreign tourists.
The COMELEC is enforcing the liquor ban that is being enforced nationwide beginning May 11 to May 12. The COMELEC said hotels, resorts, restaurants, and other similar establishments certified by the Department of Tourism could apply for an exemption from the liquor ban.
Raymond Chrispin Gerardo, the COMELEC spokesperson in Aklan told the Manila Standard that they are still consolidating the lists of restaurants that avail of liquor ban exemption.
“There are many bars in Boracay that want to be exempted from the ban but could not apply because they may be lacking documentary requirements,”: said Gerardo.
One of these requirements is that the DoT should accredit an establishment.
In a related report, the Provincial Disaster Risks and Reduction Management Office said it is now in code blue alert to ensure peaceful elections.
Based on the records of the COMELEC. Aklan has 414 890 registered voters.
