Aklan Province Gains Geographical Indication (GI) for Aklan Piña

KALIBO, Aklan- The Province of Aklan has gained the Certificate of Geographical Indication (GI) for Aklan Piña during its Awarding Ceremony held on September 19, 2025 at the Marzon Convention Center in Andagaw, Kalibo, Aklan.

Presented by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) led by Director General Atty. Brigitte M. Da Costa-Villaluz and Atty. Jesus Antonio Z. Ros from the Bureau of Trademarks, the certificate was received by Ms. Anna India C. Legaspi, the President of Aklan Piña and Indigenous Fibers Manufacturers and Traders Association, Inc. (Aklan Piña Mantra).

The historical moment was witnessed by various groups of special guests including the DTI 6 Officials represented by OIC-Regional Director Ma. Dinda R. Tamayo, OIC-Assistant Regional
Director Mutya Eusores, and the Provincial Directors from the provinces of Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, and Iloilo. Also present were representatives from the National Government Agencies
(NGAs), Local Government Units (LGUs), the academe, industry partners like the Aklan Fashion Designers Association, Inc. (AFDA) and Fashion Designers Council of Aklan Philippines, Inc.
(FDCAPI), Aklanon micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), piña weavers, media partners, and the DTI Aklan Provincial Office Team.

The attendees were warmly welcomed by DTI Aklan Provincial Director Romel L. Amihan, who expressed his gratefulness for the strong collaboration between the different groups that have
worked together for the attainment of this milestone for the province.

Meanwhile, in his Inspirational Message, Assistant Secretary of the DTI’s Regional Operations Group, Mr. Dominic R. Tolentino, Jr., emphasized the significance of a GI in an area. He
highlighted that GI is more than just a mark of origin—it represents pride, craftsmanship, and cultural identity, driving economic benefits for the region.

Messages of support were also delivered by several dignitaries, including Senator Loren Legarda, TESDA Secretary Jose Francisco “Kiko” Benitez, Hon. Jesus R. Marquez of Aklan’s 1st
Legislative District, Hon. Florencio T. Miraflores of the 2nd Legislative District of Aklan, Kalibo Mayor Juris B. Sucro, and Ms. Gabrielle “Billie” Calizo-Quimpo, Federation Director of Soroptimist
International.
