DOST Western Visayas strengthens measurement accuracy, compliance through on-site calibration activity

Ubajqy, Aklan- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Western Visayas continues to work with the local government units to bring its calibration services closer to the communities through calibration caravans.

In partnership with the local government units of Ibajay and Buruanga in Aklan, DOST Western Visayas provided on-site calibration services for weighing devices of vendors and business operators in the two municipalities, promoting measurement accuracy, regulatory compliance, consumer protection, and fair trade.

Accurate measurements are critical to fair market transactions, particularly in establishments that sell goods by weight. Through calibration, measuring instruments used by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are checked against certified reference standards to ensure accurate and reliable readings. The service covers spring, mechanical, platform, and digital weighing scales.

The initiative supports Republic Act No. 7394, or the Consumer Act of the Philippines, which safeguards consumers in transactions involving weights and measures. The law requires the regular testing, calibration, and sealing of instruments used in consumer-related transactions, helping promote transparency and accountability in commercial transactions.

In total, the calibration caravan served 194 customers in Ibajay and 98 in Buruanga, highlighting the reach of the service and the demand for accessible calibration among market vendors and business operators.

Through this collaboration between DOST Western Visayas and LGUs, calibration services are made more accessible, demonstrating how technical expertise and local collaboration can protect consumers, address community needs, and support local economic development.
