Metro Manila, Philippines – We have arrived!
Metro Manila-based freelance journalists made history together on Saturday, October 21, 2023, as they lunched and launched the Filipino Freelance Journalists’ Guild (FFJ).
The announcement comes after two years of arduous organizing and research into the possibility of creating a group that is solely dedicated to freelance journalists in the Philippines. While the event was organized by Manila-based freelancers, the guild envisions expanding its reach to the regions.
“Finally, there will be an organization that will specifically cater to the needs and demands and grievances of freelancers, especially in a changing media landscape such as ours,” its interim chairperson, Maro B Enriquez, said in a Facebook post.Jonathan de Santos, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines’ (NUJP) current chairperson, also extended his congratulations and message of support:
“The formation of this guild shows how we can go from solidarity with each other to organizing and joining together for stronger collective action.”
The NUJP organized the feasibility study on freelancers, and helped with the launch of FFJ.With the FFJ’s establishment comes the hope that freelancing in the Philippines will become more favorable to the plight of the Filipino freelancer through its creation of programs and campaigns that will not only uplift its members, but the journalism community as a whole.
