Regional coalition earns Asia’s highest nod for liberal democracy

Pasig City- The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Philippines bestowed the 2026 Freedom Flame Award on the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats at Decagon Events in Pasig City.

The presentation took place as FNF marked 40 years of operation in the Philippines and the 15th anniversary of this program. With the theme “Kalayaan Noon, Ngayon at Bukas – 40 Years of Freedom in Action,” the evening highlighted individuals and institutions widening democratic avenues throughout the country and the broader region.

Concepcion “Chit” Asis, Lead Convenor of the People Power Volunteers for Reform in the Caraga Region, presented the award to CALD Chair and former Cabinet Secretary Butch Abad, who accepted the honor on behalf of the regional network.

FNF’s official citation praised the organization for its tireless work in strengthening pro-freedom networks and advancing rule of law, human rights, and liberal democratic frameworks across Asian territories.

“For years, CALD has helped strengthen regional partnerships that champion freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. By fostering dialogue, cooperation, and collective action, it has shown that the fight for democracy doesn’t stop at national borders, but it is a shared responsibility,” FNF noted in recognizing the organization.

By bringing together like-minded political parties, reformists, and civic advocates from across the continent, CALD has built a robust platform for political dialogue and mutual support, proving that democratic resilience in one country directly fortifies its neighbors.

The 2026 Freedom Flame Awards also celebrated key domestic organizations that form the bedrock of Philippine civil society, namely Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines, Angat Buhay, Local Government Unit of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte, and Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership.

The evening featured key addresses reinforcing the idea that fundamental rights require active, everyday stewardship. Former Rep. Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III reminded attendees that sharing democratic ideals multiplies their power rather than diluting it.

Diplomatic representatives, including Mathias Kruse, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy, reiterated the role of international unity in preserving transparent governance.

FNF Philippines Country Director Dr. Almut Besold reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to building resilient local institutions, expanding youth engagement, and deepening regional coalitions like CALD as they step into their next decade of work.

By honoring CALD’s regional impact alongside grassroots domestic movements, the 2026 Freedom Flame Awards underscored that keeping liberty alive is a perpetual, shared responsibility, whether at the local council level or across international borders.
