DOST WV Empowers Local MSMEs Through Training on AI

Iloilo City- The Department of Science and Technologt-Western Visayas through the Iloilo Provincial Science and Technology Office (Iloilo PSTO) conducted a training on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that aimed to capacitate participants to leverage AI as a tool for improving efficiency, minimizing errors, and enhancing customer service.

The activity kicked-off with a brief introduction to AI, its capacity, and how to apply and properly utilize AI in the MSME’s operations. Mr. John Christian D. Albances, Science Research Specialist II and Head of Applications Development and Innovations Unit of the DOST Western Visayas’ Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO), served as the resource speaker, and guided the participants all throughout the training and hands-on activities of the available tools.

The training featured five modules, each providing practical insights and key takeaways shared by the resource speaker. AI can streamline core operations such as their business services, marketing and sales, operations and supply chain, and other necessary operations. He also demonstrated how to craft effective command prompts to get useful output from AI tools. The training presented a step-by-step approach to integrating AI into business operations, emphasizing the importance of identifying problems that AI can effectively address, and starting with a pilot project that delivers measurable results. It also introduced the SMART framework for implementing AI efficiently, and covered key considerations for successful adoption, including organizational readiness, legal and regulatory compliance, workforce capability, process integration, and performance evaluation.

Emphasis was placed on the responsible and transparent use of AI, highlighting its role in enhancing productivity and supporting decision-making rather than replacing human judgment. The sessions also underscored that AI is accessible to businesses of all sizes, empowering local MSMEs to strengthen their competitiveness through the right technology, proper guidance, and commitment to innovation.
