Ibajay Aklan- Newly-elected Congressman Florencioย Miraflores of the second district has started his job already by consulting with the Department of Agriculture, the Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Council -Aklan on how to increase food productivity in the province.
In a consultative meeting held at Miraflores’ residence in Ibajay, Aklan Sunday, he also asked the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) representative to allocate funds to improve the irrigation canal in his jurisdiction.
The West Aklan is composed of the towns of Numancia, Lezo, Malinao, Makato,ย Tangalan, Ibajay, Nabas, Malay, and Buruanga.ย Food security is an important aspect in the second district since, aside from feeding the residents, it is also imperative to feed tourists inย Boracay Island, known as the country’s premier beach tourism destination.
“I asked the NIA to create scientific and practical solutions to address the worsening problem of irrigation in the province. This is also our way to bring down the price of rice in Aklan,” said Miraflores.
The NIA said an original dam was supposed to be constructed in Malinao to distributeย water to rain-fed farm lands, but the reality now is prevalent. The Aklan River is low, unlike before and many areas are now developed.
PAFC-Aklan President Arnulfo Magcope said they also asked Miraflores to provide funding for the cleaning of coastal areas for fishing and the popularization of organic farming.
“This we plan to do in cooperation with the Aklan Provincial Agriculture Office with Egr. Alexys Apolonio,” Magcope said.
