Iloilo City- Two Bachelor of Science in Biology students completed their practical training at the Department of Science and Technology Western Visayas-Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (DOST Western Visayas-RSTL).
The students under the Microbiology track from West Visayas State University (WVSU) were provided with intensive lab exposure to support them to become industry-ready professionals in the future. The immersion is strategically designed to boost employability through learning Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and familiarizing the testing and calibration services provided by RSTL. Laboratory analysts closely guided the trainees to ensure proper understanding of laboratory procedures and standards. Furthermore, the trainees were also involved in the development of an instructional video material on how to properly collect food and water samples for microbiological testing.
Elnora Abegail Jaranilla, one of the OJTs, shares, “Our training here prepared us to be in the workforce. I was able to apply the Good Laboratory Practices learned in RSTL in the conduct of my undergraduate thesis.”
The other student, Rafenil Gayunan, also adds, “It was beyond expectations. RSTL not only taught us the technicalities of laboratory testing and calibration; we were taught the realities of working in a team.”
Beyond developing technical competencies, DOST WV-RSTL also highlights the importance of strong work ethics, collaboration, and professionalism— values essential in nurturing future scientists and advancing science and technology innovation in the region. (KSFulgencio/RSTL)
