Kasambahays, employers, brgy. officials celebrate Kasambahay Day



Iloilo City- Para kay K” was the by word of the employers, barangay officials and government employees during the 2024 Kasambahay Day Celebration held at Iloilo City on January 20, 2024 to recognize the value of the kasambahays.

In collaboration with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Iloilo City Government, the gathering was aimed at recognizing the services and sacrifices of household helps, empowering them with valuable information on their rights and benefits, providing them opportunities for services from different government agencies and pampering them with goods, gifts and freebies from generous sponsors.

Through the directives of Regional Director Atty. Sixto T. Rodriguez, Jr., the activity was conducted in line with the Department’s thrust of providing services to the underserved, unserved and hard to reach sectors of the society.

“Kasambahays cook, wash plates and clothes, tend to the homes and children or elderly parents of their employers,” said Assistant Regional Director Melisa S. Navarra in her message during the program. She recognized the vital contributions of the kasambahays in the life of their employers, “your sacrifices is crucial to the life of your employers, it allows them to go to their work with peace of mind and confidence.” In return, Navarra stressed that the government provides protection to the rights and ensures the welfare of the kasambahays in order to preserve their dignity as human beings.

The gathering was also an opportunity for the DILG to call on all Kasambahays to register with the local government unit where their employment is situated. Ms. Maricel M. Bechayda,

Chief, DILG 6-LGMED enumerated the importance of registration of kasambahays which includes protection and security. Ms. Bechayda also advised the barangay officials to diligently perform their responsibilities for the Kasambahays’ registration.

Batas Kasambahay Regional Focal Andrea Pama-Ligad discussed the salient features of RA 10361 or the Batas Kasambahay and the protocols on the rescue and rehabilitation of abused Kasambahay as embodied in the Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) No. 2015-002 of the DOLE, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), DILG, Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

The kasambahays and the employers also benefited from the lecture on practical safety and health tips in the workplace through the lecture of Mr. Melveen Melocoton of the Occupational Safety and Health Center 6. Mr. Melocoton emphasized that safety and health should be the concern of the employers and the workers.

Social protection in case of work related accidents and diseases was presented by Employees Compensation Commission (ECC) Officer-in-Charge Stephen Barredo. The participants were enlightened on the different cases that merits lawful compensation and the processes of claims. Most of them said that it was the first time they heard of this benefit.

To underscore the importance of health and well-being, nutritionist Romela Dee Candoliza of the National Nutrition Council gave a talk on the government’s nutrition program, the 10 Kumainments and Pinggang Pinoy.

The Help Desk composed of representatives from the Social Security System (SSS), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), Home Development Mutual Fund (HDMF-Pag-Ibig) also assisted the Kasambahays on their queries and clarifications. The Pag-Ibig and Philhealth accepted onsite registration of unregistered participants.

The Kasambahays were pampered with free massage, and apart from valuable information, all participants took home tote bags, freebies and goods from DOLE, DILG, PhilHealth, ECC and the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB). //jpm
