KALIBO, Aklan- The Regional Development Council in Western Visayas is set to discuss the planned cityhood of the towns of Kalibo, Aklan, and San Jose, Antique, during their quarterly meeting this November.
For Kalibo, an insider privy to the said meeting said that the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) cited a need for the neighboring towns of Kalibo, such as Numancia, Banga, and New Washington, to either of them offer a barangay to strengthen Kalibo’s bid to become a city.
“Once this becomes successful, we hope to replicate its success in San Jose, Antique,” the source added.
Mark Sy, from the Kalibo LGU, said that the town was recently named the ninth most competitive local government unit in the entire country. This is based on the competitive index of cities and municipalities for first- and second-class municipalities.
The town of Kalibo, under the leadership of Mayor Juris Bautista-Sucro, was the only LGU in the Visayas listed in the competitive index.
The first in the lists was Cainta, Rizal; Taytay, Rizal; Baliuag, Bulacan; Carmona, Cavite; San Mateo, Rizal; Midsayap, North Cotabato; Binangonan, Rizal; Angono, Rizal; Kalibo, Aklan, and Isulan, South Kudarat.
