Sustained Artificial Insemination program to combat effects of Climate Change

Knowing the potential of the livestock industry of Western Visayas which continuously supplied the demands of the Metro Manila and Luzon markets, the Department of Agriculture (DA) 6 livestock program has reviewed its program implementation and reporting activities recently.

This focuses on the implementation of the Unified Artificial Insemination Program (UNAIP) which was implemented in collaboration with DA Family Agencies like Philippine Carabao Center(PCC), National Dairy Authority (NDA), local government units and private village-based AI technicians.

According to Glenn Mariano, Livestock program focal person, there is a need to harmonize the UNAIP programs, activities, reporting of accomplishments and project monitoring in order to capture the best practices and innovations employed this CY 2021.

“I know that all of us were not spared by the effects of covid-19 pandemic, and we have done our part to seek possible means to reach out for our clientele not just to attain our targets but to serve them”, he said.

Mariano encouraged AI technicians to focus on these best practices and innovations, sharing of ideas and experiences in order to devise doable and achievable plans for the coming year.
“We must sustain the enthusiasm of our AI technicians and strengthen our partnership with the implementing agencies for us to produce more AI calf-drop/offspring in the region,” added Mariano.

Meanwhile, Regional AI coordinator Wilmer dela Cerna said that the infusion of breed among the livestock especially on backyard level is the best option to mitigate the effect of climate change in the livestock industry.

The adoption of the AI technology is in line with the Technology and Innovation strategy of the OneDA Reform Agenda of transforming the Philippine agriculture.
