KALIBO, Aklan-:DOST-PHIVOLCS, in partnership with the Provincial Government of Aklan, conducted a training on โ€œMainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction into Local Development, Contingency Planning, and Emergency Preparedness through the Use of REDAS Software for the province of Aklanโ€. It was held on May 4-8, 2026, at the Pinnacle Resort & Villas in Brgy. Balabag, Malay, Aklan. A previous training for Aklan was held in 2013.

DOST-PHIVOLCS Director Teresito C. Bacolcol delivered a message of support. Meanwhile, Aklan Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) Planning Officer Orlie K. Agudes shared the closing remarks of the activity.

Participants in this training were from the Province of Aklan, including representatives from the PDRRMO, PPDO, PEO, PICTO, as well as from municipalities of Altavas, Balete, Batan, Ibajay, Kalibo, Lezo, Libacao, Madalag, Makato, Malay, Malinao, Nabas, New Washington, Numancia, and Tangalan. Meanwhile, guest participants from various municipalities included representatives from Carles (Iloilo), Culasi (Antique), Maasim (Sarangani), Tarragona (Davao Oriental), Maasin City and San Juan (both of Southern Leyte). Participants from Aklan State University, OCD Region VI, and DOST Aklan also joined this initiative.

The REDAS software helps communities develop practical, data-driven, and science-based disaster risk reduction solutions by capacitating local government units and policymakers in harnessing near-real time monitoring tools (REDAS ETAM, TiTA and SRM), simulating natural hazards such as ground shaking, liquefaction, earthquake-induced landslides, and tsunamis (REDAS SHA and Floodi), developing their LGUโ€™s exposure data (REDAS EDM), as well as estimating potential impacts including physical damage, casualties, and economic loss (REDAS SHAke, CropDAT, FloAT and TsuSIM). Users are able to quantify impacts in terms of physical damages, injuries, fatalities and economic loss thereby helping them assess their current resources and capabilities using science-based information provided by REDAS.
