๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ โ Around 1,800 to 2,000 fruit-bearing trees will be planted on June 26 as Antique celebrates its annual tree-planting activity, Pista kang Kagubatan, according to the Office of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (OPENRO).
This yearโs Pista kang Kagubatan will be held in Barangay Sinundolan, San Remigio, the same venue as last year. PENR Officer Ma. Vivian Marfil explained that six to seven hectares of land need to be planted, not all of which was planted last year.
Government agencies from the national level down to the barangay level will plant jackfruit (langka), cashew (kasuy), and coffee trees. OPENRO is also coordinating with the Philippine Coconut Authority for coconut seedlings.
Governor Paolo Javier is enjoining all government agencies to take part in the Pista kang Kagubatan activity, stating that it is an โall hands on deckโ effort.
โSa dadating na June 26, tulung-tulongan tayo sa pagtanim. Hinihikayat ko ang lahat ng ahensya ng pamahalaan na makiisa sa Pista ng Kagubatan dahil magiging legasiya din natin ito,โ said the governor.
โAng purpose nga we have this Pista kang Kagubatan is to develop ang mga micro-watershed area natun,โ said Marfil, explaining the objective of the activity, which is mandated under Provincial Ordinance No. 2015-109, designating the last Friday of June for tree-planting activities.
Barangay Sinundolan is one of Antiqueโs more than 30 micro-watershed sitesโcatchment areas that drain water into rivers, streams, and underground aquifers, making them a source of water for local communities.
โAlthough may nga existing run dyan nga mga kahoy kag mga gatubod nga tubig, but we wanted more nga hindi lang kung tag-ururan but then whole year round nga we will have an abundant supply of water [in the area,โ Marfil added.
She also said that planting fruit-bearing trees will provide an additional source of income for the community while contributing to the provinceโs forest cover.
