Iloilo City – The Western Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium (WVHRDC) successfully conducted the Webinar on Bioinformatics and its application in Clinical and Health Research, gathering 511 participants from academic, medical, and research institutions across Western Visayas and other parts of the country.

The session was led by Mr. Karl Angelo P. Tenizo of the Philippine Genome Center Visayas, who provided an extensive discussion of bioinformatics, tracing its evolution from foundational principles to its modern role in addressing global health crises such as cancer, COVID-19, and antibiotic resistance. The session also detailed modern methodologies like multi-omics, CRISPR-Cas9, and mRNA vaccine development, showing how genetic data can be used to improve healthcare services. While showing the great potential of these technologies, the discussion also covered challenges in using them, such as data privacy issues, the need for clinical testing, and limited resources in local settings.

The session also demonstrated how bioinformatics can be integrated into existing and future health research, including applications in precision medicine, disease monitoring, drug discovery, and predictive AI and machine learning models.

In addition, facilities of the Philippine Genome Center Visayas were highlighted, including its specialized equipment and local capacity for processing and generating genetic data to support advanced research in the region.

This specialized webinar aims to promote the adoption of data-driven methodologies among regional researchers and forms part of the continuing efforts of WVHRDC and DOST Western Visayas to strengthen the regional health R&D ecosystem. Through initiatives like this, WVHRDC and DOST Western Visayas advance knowledge sharing, build technical capacity, and support the integration of emerging technologies to drive more responsive, innovative, and evidence-based healthcare solutions in the region.
