Aklanon Phillip Y. Kimpo Jr. Among Five Honored by KWF for Outstanding Contributions to Philippine Languages

KALIBO, AKLAN — Aklanon poet, writer, cultural advocate, and public servant Phillip Y. Kimpo Jr. has been named one of five recipients of the Natatanging Pagkilala 2026 (Outstanding Recognition 2026) by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) for his significant contributions to the promotion of Filipino and other Philippine languagesThe KWF announced the five awardees as part of its celebration oPambansrecognizing who have demonstrated exceptional contributions and excellence in their respective fields in advancing the Filipino language and the country’s diverse linguistic heritage.
Kimpo joins Alexandra M. Eala, Clesencio B. Rambaud, Linda R. Andaya, and Oscar M. Balajadia Jr. among this year’s honorees.
Championing Filipino and Akeanon
Kimpo, who currently serves as Vice Kalibo, has established himself as poet, writer, cultural advocate, and public servant who has actively promoted literature, arts, culture, and language both in Aklan and at the national level.
He is the author of 11 books, several of which were published by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the KWF under its Aklat ng Bayan series.
His first poetry collection was among the selected books launched by the NCCA and KWF during the 2020 Buwan ng Wika celebration.
Kimpo is a two-time winner of the KWF’s Talaang Ginto sa Tula and holds the distinction of being the first and only Aklanon to win the Grand Prize in the Filipino Category of the Maningning Miclat Poetry Awards.
He has also received fellowships from prestigious national writers’ workshops organized by institutions including the University of the Philippines, Silliman University, IYAS, and the University of Santo Tomas.
From Literature to Public Service
His influence extends beyond writing and poetry.
Kimpo previously served as president of LIRA (Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo), one of the country’s leading organizations of Filipino-language poets, and as a director of the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL).
He also served as editor-in-chief of ABS-CBN Choose Philippines.
In the field of cultural documentation, Kimpo was among the principal contributors to the NCCA’s “Sagisag Kultura ng Filipinas” encyclopedia, contributing 312 of its approximately 2,000 articles.
In Aklan, the provincial government recognized him through a legislative resolution as the “poet-laureate of Aklan of his generation.”
As a public servant, Kimpo served as a Kalibo municipal councilor from 2016 to 2025 before becoming vice mayor in 2025.
During his years in local government, he pushed various initiatives aimed at strengthening arts, culture, literature, and language in the province.
Among these initiatives are the The Aklan Literati, the Pamisaea it Kalibo Literary Festival, Kalibo Writers Workshop, Kalibo Academy for Campus Journalism, and Kalibo Schools Press Conference.
He also helped revive the Aklan Historical and Cultural Society, where he serves as president.
Bringing Literature to the Youth
Kimpo’s advocacy has also focused heavily on young people and education.
As an NGO volunteer promoting the national language, he managed the “Pambansang Edukasyong Pampanitikan,” a series of free literary seminars and workshops that reached more than 3,000 teachers and students in over 30 locations across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The initiative contributed to the recognition of the organization he led as one of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) in 2011. Then-President Benigno S. Aquino III personally presented the award at Malacañang Palace.
Kimpo has also worked closely with the KWF for nearly a decade in implementing language and cultural programs in Aklan.
Among the most recent activities were workshops on Official Correspondence Writing, the National Orthography, Filipino Sign Language, and Baybayin, as well as the KWF’s consultation with the Ati community of Boracay Island in April 2026.
A Strong Partnership With KWF
His advocacy has also helped bring KWF resources closer to the community.
Through his initiative, the Kalibo Public Library now has a dedicated section for KWF books, giving students, teachers, researchers, and readers greater access to materials on Philippine languages and literature.
More recently, Kimpo filed a resolution before the Sangguniang Bayan of Kalibo proposing the establishment of a Bantayog ng Wika (Monument to Language) in the municipality.
His work has earned him several national recognitions. He was previously named by ABS-CBN Lifestyle as one of the country’s “Nine Millennial Politicians to Watch For.”
He was also recognized as one of the country’s 20 “great leaders” alongside the late former Interior Secretary and Naga City mayor Jesse Robredo, in the book Playbook for Successful Politics and Governance published by the Germany-based Friedrich Naumann Foundation and Kaya Natin Foundation.
Recognition of a Lifelong Advocacy
The KWF’s Natatanging Pagkilala 2026 adds another national distinction to Kimpo’s long record of work in literature, culture, language, and public service.
For Aklan, his recognition highlights not only the achievements of an individual writer and public servant but also the continuing efforts to preserve and promote Filipino, Akeanon, and the country’s other indigenous and regional languages.
Kimpo’s recognition comes as the Philippines celebrates Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa 2026, underscoring the important role of writers, educators, cultural workers, and public servants in keeping the country’s languages and literary traditions alive for the next generation.
