Benilde Film alumnus heads to Estonia to compete at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde alumnus Vahn Leinard C. Pascual’s first full-length feature “Status: Rejected” is set to make its international debut at the 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, after winning at the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival 2026.

Competing as an official selection in the First Feature Competition, “Status: Rejected” is the sole Philippine entry at this year’s FIAPF-accredited A-list festival, which runs from November 6 to 22.

The narrative focuses on Virginia “Biring” Divinagracia (played by veteran actress Ruby Ruiz), a 69-year-old widow feeling increasingly invisible inside her family’s home. After facing four consecutive U.S. tourist visa denials, her hopes of reuniting with her son abroad dim.

Encouraged by a friend, Biring turns to the digital space, where she encounters an American named Steve Johnson. What starts as an online romance blurs the line between hope and delusion, forcing Biring to reckon with her sense of worth, generational tension, and the pursuit of connection.

The script, co-written by Pascual with Jaymar Castro and Ivan Villacorta Gentolizo, carefully balances poignant longing with witty humor. Rather than framing elderly women merely as passive victims, the narrative treats them as complex, desire-driven individuals navigating economic struggle and social alienation.

“Personally, this selection means so much to me, especially since this is my first feature film. To have a deeply Filipino story reach an international audience is something I could only dream of when we were making it,” Pascual shared.

Entering an A-list European film festival carries both artistic and cultural pride for Pascual. Watching his first feature travel overseas feels both humbling and unexpected. “Being part of the First Feature Competition also makes this experience particularly meaningful, as it gives emerging filmmakers like me an opportunity to share our first features on an international platform,” the young director added.

“Status: Rejected” struck a deep chord with critics and audiences alike during its initial run at Cinemalaya XXII, where the film won the NETPAC Award for its depiction of Asian realities.

Ruiz earned the Best Actress award, sharing the title with Marietta Subong (Pokwang) of “2 Valid IDs.”

The film also features Alessandra de Rossi as Biring’s over-controlling daughter Anna, Beverly Salviejo as her sharp-witted friend Tessie, and Yani Villarosa as her rebellious granddaughter Sophia.

Pascual also collaborated with cinematographer Martika Ramirez Escobar, editor Che Tagyamon, production designer Marielle Hizon, composer Hans Piozon, executive producers Paul Soriano, Mark Victor, and Omar Sortijas, and producers Micah Tadena and Fea Fortuna.

From the halls of Benilde to the competitive stages of Cinemalaya and Tallinn, “Status: Rejected” shows that stories driven by honesty, vulnerability, and local nuance find a global audience.
