
KALIBO, Aklan- The local government of Kalibo, through its Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), provides appreciation for waste workers for the first time.
Adorada Reynaldo MENRO head says that the activity is another first under the administration of Kalibo Mayor Juris Bautista-Sucro.
On June 20, Reynaldo announced the launch of the Waste Workers Appreciation Week.
“As our way of saying thank you to our waste warriors,” she added. Among the activities include free medical check-up, consultation, and hair cut for waste workers. The town of Kalibo has 39 garbage collectors, eight waste pickers/recyclers, 13 disposal facility personnel, 40 street sweepers, and ten Sustainable Waste Management System enforcers.
The week long activities is also in partnership with the Philippine College of Physicians Capiz-Aklan Chapter; Drugstore Association of the Philippine-Aklan; TESDA Health and Wellness Group, Office on Municipal General Services, Office for Human Resource Management and the Municipal Health Office-Kalibo, MEEDO-Public Affairs, Information and Communication Division.
“Waste workers are the driving force behind any solid waste management system. They foster the health of people and the environment by collecting and processing waste, including hazardous and infectious wastes, which can have negative effects on residents and environmental health,” she added.(photo by: Doniel Aguirre)
