Davao City- Christmas, the festivity of all seasons, is the most eagerly awaited holiday in the country. Many Filipinos begin their celebrations as early as September, reflecting their excitement for this significant occasion.

This holiday marks the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior of humanity. While the emphasis is on the Son, numerous symbols and traditions accompany the celebration. One notable symbol is the Christmas tree, which, according to certain legends, is believed to be the same tree from which the cross used for Jesus’ crucifixion was made.

Various malls and hotels have already lit and adorned their premises with their unique Christmas trees. The Grand Regal Hotel, situated in Lanang, joined this festive display just 21 days prior to Christmas Day.

Right after Ryan Bernard Go, the president of Grand Land, Inc., welcomed all the guests and visitors, Benrick Ryan Go, delivered his timely message: “As we look back on what a successful year it was, we look forward to the year 2025 with optimism and excitement as we are given yet another opportunity to define what it means to be grand.

The director of operations further stated: “May the light that revolves around this tree be a symbol for the light wider as we set out for early development of the Grand Convention Center.”

A number of dignitaries were present at the lighting ceremony. While certain invited guests were unable to attend, they arranged for representatives to convey their messages on their behalf.

“The lighting of Christmas trees not only marks the beginning of the holiday season but also serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of community, hope, and generosity that Christmas brings,” said Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte in his message.

“May this Christmas Tree lighting ceremony inspire us all to be a source of light to others, especially to those who may need an extra dose of love and support this season,” said Mayor Duterte in a message that was read by Jennifer R. Romero, the officer-in-charge of the Davao City Tourism Operations Office.

“Christmas has always been a gift to all of us,” said Tanya Rabat-Tan, the regional director of the Department of Tourism in Davao Region, in her message. “This much-anticipated time of the year is one of the best times to celebrate all our shared victories and surpassed challenges.

“It is also a great moment to deeply reflect and learn from our former experiences,” added the tourism official whose message was read by assistant regional director, Judy Calaljo. “And most importantly, it is the season where we are reminded to employ kindness, show forgiveness, and strengthen our togetherness.”

During the dinner, Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go also shared his message via video conferencing.

“This event truly embodies the essence of Christmas, a time of love, giving, and togetherness,” he said. “This season reminds us of the importance of sharing blessings and spreading kindness especially to those who are most in need. May this beautifully-lit Christmas tree inspire hope and joy in the hearts of everyone.”

The beneficiary of the event was the SOS Children’s Village-Davao.

The evening’s dinner and fellowship were enhanced by musical performances from Jona Soquite, the inaugural grand champion of “The Voice Teens.”

The department heads of the Grand Regal Hotel were in full force during the event. They are Domini Sebastian del Rosario, front office manager; Mira D. Ty, sales manager; Gare c. Abellar, executive chef; Chief security officer Nestor L. Monge, Jr., executive housekeeper; Mae R. Gilot, chief accountant; Mel Mark G. Callata, F&B supervisor; Engr. Rhod Kevin N. delos Reyes, officer-in-charge of the engineering department; and Melissa S. Pimentel, human resources manager.

The department heads are fully supported by the hotel’s general manager, Violeta B. Casianan.

Indeed, it was a memorable night – a prelude for the coming of Christmas season!—###
