KALIBO, AKLAN โ€” The Provincial Government of Aklan has enacted General Ordinance No. 2025-003, a comprehensive anti-discrimination measure that protects every Aklanon from unfair treatment and exclusion.
Governor Jose Enrique “Joen” Miraflores signed the ordinance into law, calling it “a strong move to protect every Aklanon from unfair treatment and exclusion.”
The ordinance, principally authored by Provincial Board Member Edmundo “EJ” Tolentino Jr. and co-sponsored by Jay Tejada, covers all forms of discrimination including race, color, civil status, social status, health status, disability, age, religion, creed, ideological beliefs, and physical appearance.
Significantly, the law includes protection for sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE), making Aklan the 12th province in the country to pass such legislation.
“We needed to make sure that everyone in Aklan felt safe, accepted, and protected for simply being themselves,” said Tolentino. The ordinance prohibits discrimination in both public and private settings and ensures protection against retaliation for victims and whistleblowers.
The law demonstrates Aklan’s commitment to creating an inclusive province where dignity, fairness, and equal opportunity are guaranteed for all residents, regardless of their background or identity.
