BORACAY Island, Malay Aklan — The provincial government of Aklan disclosed that it is seeking to turn over the responsibilities of issuing QR codes to tourists among the accredited hotels in this resort island.

Aklan Governor Florencio Miraflores announced the proposed move during the launching of the swabbing facility at the Dr. Ciriaco Tirol Hospital here over the weekend. This comes after several tourists from Metro Manila last week complained through social media after they failed to receive a QR code from the Aklan provincial government.

This comes after several tourists from Metro Manila last week complained through social media after they failed to receive a QR code from the Aklan provincial government.

The QR code is meant as a contact tracing app of the province as part of the mitigating measures against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

“Some hotels have expressed their interests in helping us in the processing of the QR codes. Through the coordination of our office, the hotels could soon release the QR codes provided that tourists have completed the requirements,” Miraflores said.

The provincial government also urged tourists visiting the island to apply a QR code at least seven days prior to their flight towards Boracay.

Among those requirements prior to the release of the QR codes were the confirmed hotel bookings and vaccination certificate indicating tourists are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. For those tourists who are not fully vaccinated, a 72-hours effectiveness of the negative
RT-PCR test should be implemented.

The procedure will be part of the province’s preparation for the anticipated influx of foreign tourists to come to Boracay.

Meantime, acting Malay Mayor Floribar Bautista said that they are still waiting for Department of Tourism (DoT) to greenlight the entry of foreign tourists.

“We anticipate that DoT officials will make some review if Boracay is prepared to receive foreign tourists. Boracay is ready, but we hope to hear from the DoT soonest,” Bautista said.
