DOST formalizes nationwide iHub initiative; Western Visayas leads implementation

Butuan City- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) formally advanced its nationwide Innovation Hub (iHub) initiative through a ceremonial Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing held on February 24, 2026, at the Watergate Hotel in Butuan City.

The ceremony was led by DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr., together with Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang, Undersecretary for Research and Development Dr. Leah J. Buendia, Deputy Executive Director and Officer-in-Charge of PCIEERD Engr. Ninaliza H. Escorial, DOST Western Visayas Regional Director Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, and DOST Regional Directors nationwide.

The event underscored DOST’s strengthened commitment to institutionalizing the Philippine Regional Innovation System through the establishment of Provincial and Regional Innovation Hubs (iHubs) across the country. As a nationwide initiative, the iHub program is designed to serve as a strategic platform for nurturing startups, supporting MSMEs, accelerating technology commercialization, and fostering dynamic collaboration among government, academe, and industry.

Notably, DOST Western Visayas serves as the lead implementing agency for the iHub initiative, spearheading coordination, program development, and operational alignment among regional offices to ensure cohesive and effective nationwide implementation. Through this leadership role, DOST Western Visayas drives the harmonization of innovation strategies and strengthens interregional collaboration in building a resilient and innovation-driven economy.

The program further featured the presentation of DOST Western Visayas’ SMARTGOV initiative by DOST VI ICTO Head Mr. Garry T. Balinon, highlighting digital governance innovations that enhance efficiency, transparency, and public service delivery.
