KALIBO, AKLAN โ€” The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Western Visayas celebrated the achievements of local enterprises and communities during the 2026 PAGKILAEA: SETUP and CEST Forum and Awards, held at the ABL Sports Complex in Kalibo, Aklan.

The event, part of the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week, highlighted how government assistance in science and technology can transform small businesses, improve productivity, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), DOST supports micro, small, and medium enterprises in acquiring modern equipment, improving production processes, and strengthening their competitiveness.

Among the 2026 awardees were QBโ€™s Solar-Powered Ice Cubes of Antique, recipient of the SETUP PRAISE Award; Ariana Coco Products of Antique, recipient of the CIRCLE Award; and ATON Marketing of Antique, recipient of the I-READY Award.

Meanwhile, Barangay Binuntucan in Pontevedra, Capiz, received the Best CEST Community Award, together with Capiz State Universityโ€“Pontevedra Campus as its implementing partner.

Filbake Food Corporation of Kalibo shared its journey from a small bakery enterprise into a growing food manufacturing company through technology adoption, product innovation, food safety improvements, and better management systems.

DOST Assistant Secretary for Countryside Development Engr. Maria Teresa B. De Guzman emphasized the importance of helping Filipino entrepreneurs transform their knowledge and innovations into marketable products.

Beyond business development, the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program demonstrates how innovation can improve livelihoods and strengthen communities, particularly in rural areas.

The recognition of these enterprises and communities underscores an important lesson: science and technology should not remain confined to laboratories and universities but must reach ordinary entrepreneurs, farmers, workers, and communities.

Through continued partnerships among government, industry, and academic institutions, DOST is helping build a more productive, competitive, and inclusive Western Visayas.
