Nabas, Aklan – The conduct of the Fisheries Management Area Rating Tool (FishMARK) assessment has been successfully carried out in the Local Government Units of Nabas and Ibajay, marking a significant milestone in the province’s efforts to strengthen coastal resource management.
Nabas and Ibajay are the final two remaining coastal municipalities in Aklan to undergo the FishMARK assessment led by Peace Corps Volunteer Owen Fergusson, completing the province-wide evaluation of fisheries management performance among all coastal LGUs. This achievement underscores the strong commitment of local governments and stakeholders toward sustainable fisheries governance and marine resource conservation.
During the activity in Nabas, the team also had the opportunity to meet with Municipal Mayor Hon. James Solanoy to discuss ongoing coastal resource management initiatives. The Mayor expressed full and reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to strengthening policies and programs that protect and sustain marine resources.
Meanwhile, in Ibajay, the assessment coincided with an ongoing boat registration activity, demonstrating the municipality’s continued efforts to ensure proper documentation and regulation of fishing vessels.
The FishMARK assessment serves as a vital tool in evaluating the effectiveness of local fisheries management systems, identifying strengths, gaps, and areas for improvement. The results will guide LGUs in enhancing policies, programs, and enforcement mechanisms to ensure the long-term sustainability of coastal and marine resources.
OPA is currently awaiting the submission of supporting documents from the concerned LGUs to finalize the assessment results. Once completed, the findings will be formally presented to the LGUs during the upcoming quarterly meeting. This presentation will provide an opportunity for discussion, validation, and collaborative planning for future actions.
OPA extends its appreciation to all participating municipalities, for their cooperation and dedication throughout the assessment process. The completion of the FishMARK assessment across all coastal LGUs reflects a unified step forward in achieving resilient and sustainable fisheries management in Aklan.
