San Carlos City, Negros Occidental- On January 25, 2025, the bustling public market of San Carlos City became an unexpected stage for a juvenile Philippine Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus philippensis). It was spotted by local resident Mr. Steve Roger, who quickly shared the thrilling news on Facebook.
Upon hearing the news, Forest Ranger Arwen T. Sabunod from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), along with personnel from the San Carlos City Environment and Management Office (CEMO), sprang into action. Their rapid response highlighted the commitment of local authorities to protect and rehabilitate wildlife in distress.
During the initial investigation the juvenile bird measuring 0.49 meters tall with a wingspan of 0.79 meters and weighing 0.25 kilograms has a head injury due to low flight through the market’s crowded spaces, and he got himself tangled to the net.
The CEMO took the bird into custody and brought it to a rehabilitation facility for proper medical attention, before its release to the wild.
“This rare circumstance is a call to action for residents to cherish and protect the rich biodiversity that surrounds them. Educational initiatives could help foster a deeper understanding and encourage everyone to play an active role in conservation efforts,” said DENR 6 OIC- Regional Executive Director Raul L. Lorilla
