“In as much as the Aklan Blood Coordinating Council (ABCC)  wish to double our effort of our blood collection for the year 2021, it has been a struggle to convince people to donate because of the threats of the pandemic.

The ABCC have been saying that Blood is the most essential in this time of the pandemic. But only a few people can understand the urgency of the need for blood, unless his/her family is the one needing it.

From January to December of 2021, the Philippine Red Cross Aklan have collected 3,323 units of blood, of which 1,261 was from the Local Government Unit, 865 from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and 968 from walk-ins. In contrast to the total collection of 3,323 units, PRC Aklan has dispensed 3,434 blood units to those in need of blood.

The following are the breakdowns of blood collection (with utilization percentage) versus the blood units served per municipality.
Altavas – 91 units vs 99 units served and 108.8% utilization;
Balete – 173 units vs 151 units served and 87.28% utilization;
Buruanga – 46 units vs 59 units served and 128.25% utilization;
Ibajay – 7 units vs 240 units served and 3,428% utilization’
Lezo – 170 units vs 96 units served and 56.47% utilization;
Kalibo – 62 units vs 990 units served and 14,142% utilization;
Makato – 43 units vs 154 units served with 68.13% utilization;
Malay (MDRRMO) – 156 units vs 152 units served with 11.25% utilization;
Malinao (Brgy. Liloan) – 94 units vs 148 units served with 157.44% utilization;
Madalag – 19 units vs 61 units served with 321.05% utilization;
Numancia – 36 units vs 320 units served with 611.11% utilization;
Nabas – 221 units vs 182 units served with 82.35% utilization;
Tangalan – 143 units vs 106 units served with 74.12% utilitzation.

The towns who are consistently zero in blood collection but with higher blood units served were:

Banga – 0 units vs 203 units served;
Batan – 0 units vs 157 units served;
Libacao – 0 units vs 69 units served; and
New Washington – 0 units vs 327 units served;

Most of the towns had a higher blood-dispensed report versus its collection, however it was served by the Philippine Red Cross Aklan and its neighboring chapters. They are true to their promise to continue to save lives.

On the other, the Blood Bank of Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital (DRSTMH) has a collection of more or less 1,597 units of blood and if added to PRC Aklan, our total collection for the province is only 4,920 or 0.8% of the 6,000 plus or 1% target of the total population of Aklan.

Aklan Blood Coordinating Council (ABCC) President Ms. Megs Lunn, is continually appealing to all Aklanons, whether you are an agency/office or NGO’s plus private organizations, to initiate a Mobile Blood Donation Program in their barangay or locality. She said, “Blood is the most essential in the time of dengue season, to those battling with cancer, in dialysis, vehicular accidents and especially in this time of pandemic. Doubling our effort means reminding regular donors to visit the office and donate, inviting more new donors and making it their conscious effort to donate and save lives.”

PRC Aklan Chapter Administrator Ms. Mary Joe Galeon, also reiterates the same appeal to the community. Her office is open for any interested individuals or group who would like to host the said MBDs or they can call PRC Aklan Office at 268.1425 for more details.

PRC AKLAN BAKUNA BUS

On the same relevant report from the Health Services of PRC Aklan, since September 16, 2021, they continue their efforts to send the Bakuna Bus and its team of volunteers to reach out to far flung areas of the province of Aklan.

To this date, they have administered 7,591 doses of vaccines, of which 3,330 are already fully vaccinated. The one unit of Bakuna Bus is the DOH Dental Bus owned by Aklan Province which is now utilized to serve those in need of the vaccines, specifically in the rural areas of Aklan.

PRC is one with the government in the implementation of the vaccination roll out in our country. Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman and CEO Sen. Richard “Dick” Gordon encouraged everyone, especially the unvaccinated, to get their Jabs at the nearest Bakuna Centers as soon as possible due to the threat of Omicron Variant in the country.

For more details about how Bakuna Bus can better serve your areas, please call 268.1425 and look for Ms. Mary Joe B. Galeon, Chapter Administrator.
