The assignment of Rev. Fr. Jayvee Delos Santos as Parish Priest of Batan, Aklan, has long been regarded as a blessing for both the local community and the growing circle of environmental advocates in the province. What began with a simple coffee session (an informal meeting we both agreed to have) that later became a turning point — led to the discovery of a priest whose energy, diligence, and compassion made him a natural collaborator in scientific and ecological initiatives.
Widely described as “mahugod”, helpful, and responsive, Fr. Delos Santos has gone beyond the traditional bounds of parish work. His contributions to science and the environment are numerous and significant. He successfully presented a paper at the Chemistry Congress, highlighting the synergy between faith and scientific practice. He has also co-authored five peer-reviewed research journals with our group, produced a copyrighted book, and engaged in lectures that merge the insights of Laudato Siโ with the rigor of scientific methodology. His commitment is not confined to the lecture hall or research desk. Across Aklan, Fr. Delos Santos has been instrumental in the planting of native trees in at least seven sites, ensuring that ecological restoration is not only spoken of but lived out in practice. His voice has also been a leading one in advocating for the integration of faith with environmental science — a message that resonates with both scholars and ordinary parishioners alike.
Through these endeavors, he has reignited spiritual fervor in me, whose faith may have waned, proving that a life of science and a life of faith can coexist and even enrich one another. His example stands as a testament that priesthood and scientific engagement are not opposites but allies in the pursuit of truth and service to creation. On his birthday, gratitude is expressed not only for his life but for the many ways his mission has touched communities, inspired collaboration, and restored hope. May his journey be continually blessed with health, wisdom, and strength, as his light continues to guide both the faithful and the scientific community toward a more sustainable and God-centered future.
