KALIBO, Aklan- Because of the unstoppable increase in electricity rates in the country, the Aklan Electric Cooperative (AKELCO) is exploring the possibility of sourcing nuclear energy in the future.
In his meeting with the Member Consumers Organization (MCO) in Andagao Substation , Atty. Ariel Gepty, the general manager of AKELCO, said that he recently attended a meeting in Iloilo discussing the potential of nuclear energy as a cheaper and more stable source of electricity.
“In the forum, we learned that former President Ferdinand Marcos was right all along in establishing the nuclear power plant. Some critics then were worried that it may be damaged by the earthquakes, but several years later, the nuclear facility in Bataan is still intact and unharmed,” Gepty said.
“I also learned that there is an Aklanon working in the European Nuclear Inspection Team and he is from Kalibo. Upon meeting him, he agreed to help AKELCO in ensuring a safe and reliable source of nuclear energy in the years to come,” he said.
President Bong bong Marcos Jr during his State of the Nations Address has indicated that he is dreaming the realization of a nuclear power plant in the country. Among the plans is the building of a nuclear power facility in each region.
In Western Visayas, it is eyed to be built in one of the remote islands in the region to also address concerns on the nuclear wastes.

Meanwhile, aside from nuclear power, AKELCO is also currently studying proposals to put distribution lines underground. “We have sent an engineer to Davao recently to study the possibility of placing our distribution lines underground,” he said.
