CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — A mother from Molave, Zamboanga del Sur, finally received relief after the Asenso Free Hospitalization Program settled her son’s ₱1,521,763.35 outstanding hospital bill following brain surgery.
Mary Guwendolyn C. Madriaga, a teacher, struggled to finance the medical treatment of her son, Cairo Hope, who was confined for two months at Madonna and Child Medical Center in Cagayan de Oro City.
Despite raising ₱365,000 through family, friends, and government assistance, Madriaga accumulated more than ₱1 million in debt, with a substantial hospital balance still unpaid.
With her resources stretched and the hospital bill continuing to burden the family, Madriaga eventually sought help from the Asenso Free Hospitalization Program, despite her initial hesitation to ask for assistance.
After learning about the family’s ordeal, the Asenso Pinoy Team helped secure funding to fully settle the remaining hospital bill, easing the financial burden that had compounded the family’s medical struggle.
For Madriaga, the assistance meant relief from a debt that had weighed heavily on her family while she focused on her son’s recovery. Her experience reflects the difficult choices families face when saving a loved one’s life comes with overwhelming medical expenses.
The team said the case underscores the importance of expanding medical assistance to Filipino families struggling with healthcare costs, particularly those facing prolonged hospitalization and major surgery.
While the program has yet to reach its envisioned national scale, its proponents remain committed to helping more patients and families in need, one hospital bill at a time.
