Kaohsiung, Taiwan- The Global Tourism Business Association (GTBA) recently participated in the Taiwan-Philippines Smart Port Development Forum in Kaohsiung, a significant event that brought together key stakeholders from government and private sectors.
GTBA President Michelle Taylan was a keynote speaker, highlighting the vital role of Taiwanese tourists in the Philippines’ bid to become one of Asia’s top tourism destinations. Taylan emphasized the deep cultural links and shared maritime heritage between Taiwan and the Philippines, noting that sustainable tourism can connect their oceans, culture, and future, benefiting local communities and preserving the environment.
The Philippines is a significant tourism market for Taiwan, with Filipinos topping the list of Southeast Asian visitors. As of October 2024, the Philippines recorded 371,593 tourist arrivals in Taiwan, a 35% increase from the previous year. Taylan expects this number to reach half a million by 2025, driven by Taiwan’s strong tourism offerings.
Taylan lauded Taiwan’s support in eco-tourism, joint marketing campaigns, cultural exchanges, Mandarin language training, and efforts to improve access through ports and airports. She expressed optimism about the potential for growth in tourism between the two nations, citing the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage and natural wonders.
The forum, held from December 9-11, was attended by over 30 representatives from the Philippines’ public and private sectors, including Ilocos Norte Governor Hon. Cecilia Araneta Marcos, Dr. Yu-Ping Lien, Director General of Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and representatives from Taiwan and Philippines Port Authority.
The event aimed to promote cooperation between Taiwan and the Philippines in seaport and sustainable tourism, with GTBA playing a key role in fostering this partnership.
