KALIBO, Aklan- What began as a simple vision became reality through an Ordinance sponsored by SB Member Matt Aaron P. Guzman and co-sponsored by SB Member Ketchie F. Luces, approved on April 17, 2023, paving the way for the first Kalibo Battle of Drums, Lyre, and Bugle Corps held in November 2023.

For Guzman, the event is deeply personal. He fondly recalls his days as a young band member playing the snare during his grade school years at Kalibo Pilot Elementary School (KPES), remembering the joy of practicing with bandmates and performing at school and town events.

Now in its third year, the contest, spearheaded by the Tourism and Cultural Arts Division under the leadership of Development Management Officer III Rhea Rose E. Meren and Tourism Operations Officer I Anna Ruth R. Isada has become one of the main highlights of the Kalibo Foundation Day Celebration, drawing excitement and pride from schools and the community alike.

Over the years, what was then fondly called the “Day of the Drums” became a cherished tradition that resonated deeply with Kalibonhons. However, the activity eventually waned until three years ago, when the administration of Mayor Juris Bautista Sucro revived one of the most vibrant and meaningful expressions of school and community spirit. The Battle of Drums, Lyre, and Bugle Corps is more than just a competition.

It celebrates culture, discipline, teamwork, and tradition. The rhythmic beats and synchronized movements embody the unity, creativity, and youthful energy of Kalibo’s students. It serves as a tribute to the town’s love for music, camaraderie, and excellence. Behind every performance are the teachers and parents who tirelessly support their children through countless hours of practice, sleepless nights of preparation, and unwavering encouragement.

The entire school community stands as one in nurturing not just talent, but also the values of perseverance and pride.

This year’s winners are as follows: Elementary Category Champion: Kalibo Pilot Elementary School (KPES) 1st Runner-up: Andagaw Elementary School (AES)

Secondary Category Champion: Aklan National High School for Arts and Trades (ANHSAT) 1st Runner-up: Infant Jesus Academy (IJA) 2nd Runner-up: Regional Science High School for Region VI (RSHS – Region VI) 3rd Runner-up: Aklan Catholic College (ACC) 4th Runner-up: St. Gabriel College (SGC) KPES, champion during the inaugural year, has reclaimed its title from AES. KPES once again impressed the crowd, earning the awards for Best in Costume and Best in Fancy Drills, while AES took home the recognition for Best in Musicality.

Meanwhile, RSHS – Region VI, a first-time participant, was recognized as Best in Costume, while ANHSAT once again achieved a grand slam three-peat, bagging the awards for Best in Musicality, Best in Fancy Drills, and the overall Championship title.

Indeed, as the drums beat and the lyres play, the spirit of Kalibo continues to march proudly in keeping alive a legacy that unites generations through music, discipline, and shared pride.
