Boracay Island- The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Boracay successfully held its Annual General Membership Meeting (AGMM) at The Tides Hotel Boracay, bringing together board members, business leaders, and stakeholders for an afternoon of meaningful discussions, industry updates, and strengthened collaboration within the island’s business community.

The meeting opened with Past President Wesley van der Voort, who presented the President’s Report on behalf of President Djila Winebrenner. The report reflected on the Chamber’s activities, initiatives, and advocacy efforts throughout the past year, as well as the organization’s direction moving forward into 2026. As part of the presentation, the PCCI-Boracay Calendar of Events for the year was introduced, outlining upcoming programs, industry engagements, and initiatives aimed at strengthening collaboration among members. The report also highlighted ongoing and planned partnerships with the Local Government Unit of Malay, particularly with the Municipal Tourism Office, demonstrating the Chamber’s continued commitment to working closely with local government in strengthening Boracay’s tourism branding, economic initiatives, and business environment.

Chamber Advocacy and Industry Updates

Past President Michael Sweeney followed with an update on PCCI-Boracay’s continuing engagement with the LGU of Malay on key tourism and policy issues affecting Boracay’s competitiveness as a global destination.

A major concern raised was the increasing cost structure associated with visiting Boracay, particularly with the new Jetty Port surcharge, which adds to the already significant fees imposed on tourists. Comparisons presented during the report showed that a foreign family visiting Boracay may incur substantially higher entry and transportation fees compared to destinations such as Bohol, which currently offers a more business-friendly and cost-efficient tourism environment.

The discussion emphasized the need to maintain Boracay’s reputation as a welcoming and enjoyable destination, encouraging policy improvements that balance sustainability, regulation, and visitor experience. Recommendations included reviewing fee structures, simplifying entry procedures, and ensuring that policies support both the tourism sector and the long-term competitiveness of the island.

Both Mr. van der Voort and Mr. Sweeney also encouraged members to continue supporting the Chamber through active participation and the timely payment of membership dues, which sustain the organization’s advocacy work and programs.

Guest Speakers and Key Presentations

The Chamber was honored to welcome distinguished guest speakers who provided valuable insights relevant to the business community.

PCCI Regional Governor for Western Visayas, Engr. Fulbert Woo, opened the guest presentations by introducing the regional officers and sharing updates on the region’s ongoing programs and initiatives. He emphasized the importance of strong collaboration among chambers across Western Visayas and expressed enthusiasm in working more closely with PCCI-Boracay through joint activities and participation in regional events outlined in the Chamber’s calendar.

Dr. Karl Lachica, Chief Medical Director of the Ciriaco S. Tirol Hospital, then delivered an important update on the medical services available to both residents and visitors on the island. He shared the hospital’s improvements, expanded services, and future initiatives, including the development of a new emergency section designed to provide more efficient medical response and care. Members actively participated in a discussion with Dr. Lachica, raising questions regarding medical capabilities, emergency response systems, and healthcare support for both the local community and the tourism industry.

The final presentation was delivered by Engr. Antonio Barrientos, Engineer II from the DPWH Regional Office, who provided an update on ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects on the island’s Circumferential National Road. His presentation clarified which road sections fall under the responsibility of the Department of Public Works and Highways and which are managed by the Local Government Units of Aklan and Malay. The session sparked an engaging dialogue with members, who raised questions and shared concerns regarding priority areas needing improvement. Engr. Barrientos encouraged the Chamber and its members to formally submit proposals to DPWH identifying roads and infrastructure requiring attention.
