I would like to commend the efforts of our municipal officials and stakeholders in maintaining the Kalibo Shopping Center as an important hub for commerce in our community. I believe, however, that there is a wonderful opportunity to further enhance this space to better reflect the growing dynamism of Kalibo.
The shopping center is a key part of our town’s economic and social landscape, and with thoughtful redevelopment, it could become a modern, welcoming space that attracts both residents and visitors, including tourists.
A revitalized shopping center would not only boost local businesses but also create new job opportunities, support community activities, and strengthen Kalibo’s image as a vibrant municipality.
I strongly encourage the Municipal Government and the Shopping Center Association to explore collaborative opportunities, such as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), to combine public oversight with private sector expertise.
This approach could bring in additional resources, innovative ideas, and funding while ensuring that the municipality and its residents fully benefit from the development.
Additionally, I suggest revisiting the planning documents previously submitted to the Municipal Planning Office, including the proposal prepared by the late MPDO Edgardo Gerardo, with input from the Local Finance members assigned by the LCE, which I believe was submitted around 2004. Ths vision for expanding the shopping center—utilizing the roadside area between the church and the center for public use and creating a ground-level parking area—remains a valuable reference for maximizing the center’s functionality and accessibility.
I am optimistic that, with proactive leadership from the Municipal Officials—especially the MEEDO of Kalibo—and close collaboration with stakeholders, the Kalibo Shopping Center can be transformed into a modern, thriving hub.
Such development would not only enhance the town’s aesthetic appeal but also strengthen the local economy and foster community pride.
I look forward to seeing this initiative move forward, and I am confident that with the right planning and cooperation, Kalibo’s shopping center can reach its full potential.
