This year, the Philippine Network of Environmental Journalists (PNEJ) celebrates its 14 years. It aims to strengthen the journalistic skills of Filipino journalists and to collaborate with each other to build their capacity on reporting environmental-related issues.
PNEJ has been created to build a stronger, better-educated, and more closely connected network of journalists in all media to improve the quality, accuracy, and intensity of environmental reporting in the Philippines.
The current set of officers are the following:
President: Henrylito Tacio, Edge Davao and Philippine Morning Post (Davao)
Vice-President: Aireen Perol-Jaymalin, Bicoldotph (Bicol)
Secretary: Leilani Chavez, freelance (Mandaluyong)
Treasurer: Shaina Aguilar, LYF (Metro Manila)
Auditor: Sherwin de Vera, Northern Dispatch (Baguio)
The Board of Directors are:
Frank Cimatu, Northern Beacon and Rappler (Luzon, Baguio)
Jun Aguirre, Boracay Island News Network (Visayas, BINN)
Lucelle Bonzo, Davao Today (Mindanao, Davao)
Because of the pandemic that hit the country in 2021, PNEJ slowed down. It was also at this time that some officers left journalism or went abroad. But despite this, PNEJ continued to keep old members and encouraged other environmental journalists to join.
PNEJ collaborated with two projects with LYF Solutions, Inc. (with support from Internews’ Earth Journalism Network): (1) as a media grantee for one year for environment and health reporting and (2) as a media grantee with LYF for two years on infrastructure reporting in the Philippines.
During the Earth Day celebration, some members of PNEJ in tandem with Internews’ Earth Journalism Network went to Samal City to see where the Samal-Bridge will be built.
Now, the good news. We are happy to announce that this year, DW Akademie, a Germany-based media development organization, which is Deutsche Welle’s center for international media development, journalism training is collaborating with PNEJ for a climate change training in time for the COP29 climate summit. PNEJ will manage an upskilling workshop entitled “Let’s talk Climate! – Information and Communication for 10 selected journalists in July 2024. –
