Senator Binay Eyes Assistance for Raw Pina Fiber Plantations

KALIBO, Aklan—No less than Senator Maria Lourdes Nancy Binay is eyeing helping in the sustainability of the pina fiber industry in the province of Aklan.

This developed after UNESCO recently named the Aklan Pina Fiber as an intangible cultural heritage for humanity.

Sources close to Senator Binay said that her office is awaiting project proposals from the pina fiber growers and cultural heritage bearers so that they could be included in the 2025 national budget.

Senator Binay is the chairperson of the Senate Committees on Tourism, Cultural Communities, and Social Justice, Welfare, and Rural Development in the ongoing 17th Congress. Sen. Binay is also the co-chairperson of the Joint Oversight Committee on Tourism. \

In the province of Aklan, the sustainability of the pina fiber industry is being spearheaded by the Aklan Provincial Government, the Provincial Tourism Office, and other stakeholders.

The province makes use of the fiber of the red Spanish pineapple variety as raw materials for barongs, gowns, and other elegant fashion dresses.
