Boracay Island- Tourists in this resort island experienced a rare sight Friday night for seeing a marine turtle ‘pawikan’ laying out its eggs.

Joanetta Opeda, CENRO-Boracay chief, told the media Sunday that a German national and his Filipina wife were walking at the beach in Barangay Manoc-manoc. The German national reported the incident to the Boracay tourist police. The police then reported it to CENRO.

Because of this, the CENRO-Boracay staff immediately placed signage at the nesting area to keep tourists away from the site. Opeda said this is a nesting season for marine turtles.

They have yet to count the number of eggs laid so as not to disturb the area, some said the eggs were between 80-90.

According to experts, the eggs of sea turtles usually take up to 75 days to hatch. Only one percent of these eggs survive.

The CENRO-Boracay said that it first recorded a green turtle laying eggs in 2014.
