Kalibo, Aklan* — In a groundbreaking move to combat the town’s perennial flooding problem, Mayor Juris Sucro led the inauguration of a P96-million pumping station in Barangay Poblacion, Kalibo, Aklan, on February 21, 2025. The project, initiated by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), is set to significantly reduce the town’s vulnerability to floods, which have plagued residents for years.

Kalibo, situated east of the Aklan River basin, spans 50 square kilometers of predominantly alluvial momplains. Its generally flat terrain, with an average elevation of just 7 meters above sea level, includes areas that dip as low as -1 meter, making it highly susceptible to flooding. During heavy rains and typhoons, water levels often rise uncontrollably, submerging streets and homes, especially in Poblacion.

Vice Mayor Cynthia dela Cruz emphasized that flooding has been a constant challenge for Kalibo, with past disasters such as Typhoon Frank in 2008, as well as Typhoons Quinta and Undang, leaving devastating impacts on the town’s residents and infrastructure. “This new pumping station is a testament to our commitment to safeguarding Kalibo from the worsening effects of climate change,” she stated.

The Kalibo local government unit (LGU) has been proactive in pushing for flood control infrastructure and mitigation facilities to address these environmental challenges. With the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events, the newly inaugurated pumping station is expected to play a crucial role in flood management, ensuring the safety and well-being of Kalibo’s residents.

However, the success of this project also relies on the active participation of the community. Mayor Sucro urges residents to support flood prevention efforts by keeping waterways clean, properly disposing of waste, and staying informed about disaster preparedness measures. Community engagement and collective responsibility are essential in making Kalibo more resilient against future floods.

As the town moves forward, local officials reaffirm their dedication to strengthening disaster resilience through sustainable projects and infrastructure. The new pumping station is just one of many steps Kalibo is taking to secure a safer, flood-free future for its people. Residents are encouraged to stay involved and support local initiatives aimed at protecting the town from natural disasters.
