Roxas City- Some 192 households (HHs) in Barangay Barra, a coastal community in Roxas City, Capiz gained access to affordable products through the establishment of General Merchandise Project of Punta Barra Livelihood Association, a livelihood association organized and funded by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through its Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP).
This livelihood association offered fishing supplies and equipment, a demand-driven local need given that fishing is the major economic activity in the area. Also, they offered basic commodities like rice and condiments. With the association purchasing these products in bulk, their prices are lower compared to other merchants in the area.
By providing these essentials within the community, residents benefit from more affordable goods and save on transportation costs, as they no longer need to travel to distant markets.
“Ang Punta Barra Livelihood Association nagabaligya sang de kalidad nga fishing supplies sa mas manubo nga presyo nga pareho lang ang kalidad sa mga mahal nga kapareho sini nga ginabaligya sang mga dalagku nga mga dealers. Nagapasalamat ako sa asosasyon kag gina engganyo ko ang iban nga mangingisda diri sa amon lugar nga suportahan ang asosasyon nga nakaintiendi sang kinahanglanon kag nagabulig sa komunidad (The association is offering quality fishing supplies at much lower prices and the products are just as good as the expensive ones I used to buy from big stores. I am grateful and encourage other fishermen to support the association that understands and helps the community),” Giovani C. Bunda, resident of Barangay Barra, testified.
Punta Barra Livelihood Association is composed of 24 active 4Ps beneficiaries and was granted by DSWD-SLP a seed-capital fund amounting to Php480,000 and recently opened their General Merchandise Project at Sitio Punta Barra, Barangay Barra, Roxas City, Capiz./NAGEbojo/ Janelyn Verdeflor
