KALIBO, Aklan- The Aklan Electric Cooperative (AKELCO) is celebrating next month the 51sts year of its operation as an electric power utility.

Atty. Ariel Gepty, AKELCO General Manager, said that they are considering holding the Annual General Membership Assembly (AGMA) on May 27 at the ABL Sports Complex this year. The 51sts anniversary is celebrated on April 25.

As this develops, the AKELCO is also in the process of renewing its franchise. This will be lobbied at the lower house.

“During the forthcoming AGMA, we have two important issues to be tackled. One is our pending appeal to the member consumer to charge a fee to those delinquent taxpayers. The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Aklan (PCCI-Aklan) has proposed a two percent penalty. We need to resolve it during AGMA,” said Gepty.

The PCCI resolution stemmed from the announcement by AKELCO in early 2022 that it would charge a ten percent penalty to delinquent member consumers. The AKELCO claimed that more than half of overall member consumers are not paying on time, which hampers their operation.

The AKELCO has decided to suspend the appeal to charge a penalty for delinquent member consumers during AGMA last year because of the strong opposition. It is hope to be resolve on the forthcoming AGMA in time for golden anniversary.

“Our next important issue is that the AKELCO will be appealing to its members’ consumers by raising the membership fee to P100 soon. Our current charge for membership fees to AKELCO is only P5 and has never been raised since AKELCO started its operation 50 years ago,” Gepte added.

The AKELCO was born by virtue of PD No. 269 as amended by Republic Act No. 6038, otherwise known as the National Electrification Act of August 6,1973. It was registered with the National Electrification Administration (NEA) on April 25, 1972 under Registration Certificate No. 23.

AKELCO started its actual operation on April 16, 1974, when it took over the local and privately owned power company, the Kalibo Electric Power Company.

AKELCOโ€™S franchise area covers all seventeen (17) municipalities in the province of Aklan plus two (2) northern towns in the province of Antique and one (1) barangay in Capiz.
