KALIBO, Aklan- The Department of Agriculture (DA) Central Office reported that it continues to roll out P20 per kilo rice to the countryside despite having already reached its target for this year.
Atty. Genevieve Velicaria-Guevarra, assistant secretary for legislative affairs and development liaison officer of the DA, said that the department has already rolled out the P20 rice per kilo to 427 communities nationwide. The DA has only targeted 350 sites.
“Though the P20 per kilo rice is now available all over the country. The rollout program is aimed at reiterating the directive of President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr to ensure that cheap rice is made available to the countryside, especially to the vulnerable sectors such as persons with disabilities, the 4Ps, and the senior citizens,” she said.
Guevarra was here on Tuesday for the launch of the P20 rice program held at the Godofredo Ramos Park.
DA regional director Dennis Arpia said that the P20 rice cooperative was generated from the farmers in Aklan, thus called the Aklan rice.
“The Western Visayas, which includes Aklan, contribute to 11 percent of the rice supply in the country. We are the largest supplier of rice in the Visayas,” he said.
He also added that while the number of rice lands in the region could not be expanded anymore due to both urban and rural development, the productivity could still be maximized through available technologies.
After the provincial launch, the P20 rice will also be rolled out at the different municipalities in Aklan.
