Celebration Meets Sustainability

Iloilo City-Over the years, the Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo and the Ati-atihan Festival in Aklan have consistently offered both local and foreign tourists unforgettable experiences. Celebrated annually, these vibrant festivals showcase the rich cultural heritage of the region through lively street dancing, colorful costumes, and a variety of captivating performances that reflect the spirit and traditions of the Filipino people.

The Dinagyang Festival, known for its energetic atmosphere, features groups of dancers in decorative outfits. Similarly, the Ati-atihan Festival, often referred to as the “Mother of All Philippine Festivals,” celebrates the same cultural roots, in honor of Señor Santo Niño.

As the celebrations are fast approaching, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6 emphasizes the importance of environmental responsibility. They remind everyone to be mindful of their waste during these joyous occasions.

“This reminder is not only for the Dinagyang and Ati-atihan Festivals alone; we want to encourage everyone to consider their waste management during all festivals. Let this season mark the beginning of a new tradition where celebration meets sustainability,” said DENR 6 Regional Executive Director Raul L. Lorilla.

Lorilla further emphasized the impact of waste on the festival experience, “Will you enjoy wandering around Iloilo City or the streets of Aklan during these festive seasons if there are tons of trash along the way? Let’s practice CLAYGO (Clean as You Go). Local and foreign tourists are likewise reminded to be responsible consumers.”

Reflecting on the recorded trash last year, the City ENR Office’s collection of at least 100 tons of waste across Iloilo City following the highlights of the Dinagyang Festival, everyone had a share to it. This staggering amount underscored the need for concerted efforts in promoting cleanliness and environmental awareness during such large-scale events.

Both the Dinagyang and Ati-atihan Festivals stand out as some of the most vibrant and well-known celebrations in the Philippines. The Filipino community wholeheartedly embraces the week-long festivities, filling the streets of Iloilo City and Kalibo with joy, culture, and camaraderie. As these festivals continue to thrive, the call for sustainable practices becomes increasingly vital, to enjoy the richness of Filipino culture without compromising the health of the environment./DENR 6
