KALIBO, AKLAN โ For many families in Kalibo, getting proper medical care can be a challenge. With only one main public hospital serving the province, patients often face long lines and overcrowded wards. But brighter days are ahead.
Thanks to the leadership of Vice Mayor Dr. Cynthia Dela Cruz and the support of Mayor Juris Sucro, the Kalibo Community Hospital is finally becoming a reality. On February 26, 2023, the Sangguniang Bayan passed Resolution 0459, officially pushing for the hospitalโs establishment. An initial P39 million has been allocated for construction in Barangay Nalook, Kalibo, Aklan.
In 2025, the Sangguniang Bayan passed another resolution requesting additional funding from Department of Health Secretary Ted Herbosa to help complete the project. This shows the local governmentโs strong commitment to accessible and quality healthcare for every Kalibonhon.
Why Kalibo Needs This Hospital?
Kalibo has nearly 100,000 residents, but only 300 public hospital bedsโshared with the rest of Aklan. The provinceโs main public facility, Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital (DRSTMH), is a Level 2 referral hospital. It serves not just Kalibo, but also 17 municipal health units across Aklan and even patients from nearby provinces.
This heavy demand makes DRSTMH often overcrowded. And while Kalibo also has six private hospitals with 370 beds, not everyone can access them. The new Kalibo Community Hospital will help ease this burden by giving residents another option for care.
Working Together for Better Healthcare
The Kalibo Community Hospital will work side by side with existing public and private health facilities. Itโs not about replacing themโitโs about supporting them. Together, they can provide wider, more responsive care to the whole community.
Common illnesses like respiratory infections, high blood pressure, and bronchitis can be treated efficiently in a community setting. The hospital will also offer a safe space for mothers to give birthโclose to home, and with confidence.
A Healthier, More Caring Kalibo
This project is a big step forward in making healthcare more inclusive in Kalibo. Once completed, the hospital will bring quality medical services closer to where people liveโmaking it easier to get care without long waits or travel.
For many, this new hospital means hope. Hope that no one is left behind. Hope that care is within reach. Hope that every Kalibonhon can live a healthier, safer life.
Because in Kalibo, we careโand together, we heal.
