KALIBO, AKLAN – In a town where the demand for blood donations often exceeds supply, the Blood Samaritan Program is making a difference. Led by Vice Mayor Dr. Cynthia Dela Cruz in partnership with local barangays, the initiative aims to increase voluntary blood donation and ensure that life-saving blood is readily available for those in need.

As Kalibo observes Philippine Heart Month this February, the program takes center stage, reinforcing the importance of heart health and community-driven healthcare initiatives.

A Mission to Save Lives

For nine years, Dr. Dela Cruz has been a strong advocate for public health, spearheading various campaigns to improve healthcare access. As a board member of the National Red Cross, she has long recognized the challenges in maintaining a sufficient blood supply—a problem aggravated by lack of awareness, fear of needles, and the common practice of reserving donations for family and friends rather than the general public.

“The need for blood is constant, but donations are not,” said Dr. Dela Cruz. “Through the Blood Samaritan Program, we are building a culture where donating blood becomes a natural, selfless act—one that saves lives and strengthens our community.”

Barangays at the Heart of the Campaign

Barangays play a crucial role in the program’s success. Through grassroots efforts, local leaders help educate residents about the importance of regular blood donation. They also coordinate donation drives in collaboration with the Kalibo Rural Health Unit (RHU), Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital, and the Red Cross.

Just last week, a blood donation drive was held, drawing volunteers from different sectors. The turnout was encouraging, but Dr. Dela Cruz knows there is still work to be done.

A Sustainable Future for Blood Donation

With continuous advocacy and strong community partnerships, the Blood Samaritan Program hopes to eliminate blood shortages in Kalibo. “No one should have to struggle to find blood in an emergency,” Dr. Dela Cruz emphasized. “If we all take part, we can make sure it’s always there when needed.”

As Heart Month continues, the call for more Blood Samaritans grows louder. With every donation, Kalibo moves closer to a future where life-saving blood is available for all—whenever and wherever it is needed.
