Semirara- Bringing rehabilitated wildlife back to their natural habitats is one of the most fulfilling parts of environmental stewardship.
The Bantayan Release Site in Barangay Semirara, Caluya, Antique, recently became an example of new beginnings as several animals were successfully released back into their natural habitat.
Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) โ Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Sustainability Department, in partnership with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Antique and Community ENRO of Culasi, adopted the activity theme: Protecting the Wild, Preserving our Future.โ
These inter-agency partnerships are key in making sure that development and natureโs
protection can coexist.
Released wildlife are two (2) adult male White Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris colaris), four (4) adult male Spotted Dove (Streptopelia chinensis), four (4) adultย male Common Emerald Dove (Chalcophaps indica), and four (4) adult male Barred Rail (Gallirallus torquatus).
To make sure everything was done right, technical guidance and experts from PENRO Antique and CENRO Culasi were on the ground during the process. The team also checked the health of the animals, ensuring that they were strong enough to survive on their own before their release.
The Barangay Captain of Semirara and, at the same time, the President of the Liga ng Barangay (Municipality of Caluya), by Hon. Catherine Lim, showed their full support during the release operation.
The Bantayan Release Site is a special sanctuary where human activity is kept to a minimum level so animals can live freely.
Wildlife species belong to their natural home, keeping the biodiversity balanced.
These animals play a big role in keeping our environment healthyโfrom spreading seeds to keeping the soil rich, which are exactly what the community needs for a sustainable and green future in Caluya./DENR6
