Tourism establishments accredited by the Department of Tourism (DOT) will soon enjoy discounted rates for use of music recordings, including Philippine productions, as the national government agency formally sealed an agreement with Philippines Recorded Music Rights, Inc. (PRM) on Thursday (Sept. 3).
During the ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), both parties agreed to promote lawful music use within the tourism industry and encourage compliance with music licensing requirements among DOT-accredited tourism enterprises. The partnership will run for five years, effective until June 1, 2031.
Under Republic Act No. 8293, or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, the law recognizes and protects the rights of copyright and neighboring rights holders, including rights related to the public use of sound recordings and recorded performances.
The PRM is a registered and accredited Collective Management Organization (CMO) with the Intellectual Property Office, and is authorized by law to collectively administer, license, and enforce the exclusive economic rights of its members, who are sound record producers and performers.
The DOT, for its part, is mandated, in pursuit of its thrust to promote the Filipino Brand, to promote and showcase Filipino culture, including Filipino music and other cultural and artistic expressions, as integral components of the Philippine tourism experience through tourism establishments.
Just this year, the DOT appointed world-class Filipino talents BINI and SB19 as the countryโs newest Tourism Ambassadors as the agency believes that music can help promote the country as a destination, especially among foreign travelers Their respective music labels are also members of PRM.
