Aklan Media joins World Press Freedom Day Celebration on May 11
KALIBO, Aklan- Members of the tri-media in the province of Aklan are joining the synchronized celebration of the World Press Freedom Day celebration on May 11 this year.
To be held at the Ati-atihan Festival Hotel, the celebration is organized by the Aklan Media-Citizens Council (AMCC) together with the Aklan Press Club and the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines-Aklan Chapter, Akeanon News and the Boracay Island News Network.
The said event is supported by European-based international Media Support (IMS)ย through the Philippine Press Institute. Aside from Aklan, other areas celebrating the synchronized World Press Freedom Day will be hosted by Davao together with Iloilo, Region 8, Batangas, and Surigao, among others.
This year’s theme is “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis.’
Joe Torres, the director general of the Philippine Information Agency, will lead the expression of support for press freedom in Aklan together with several stakeholders.
Among the activities include the Kapehan Forum to be discussed on media safety and a short lecture on the role of media in environmental protection by the AMCC’s legal consultant, Atty. Darren Mae Esto, and to the winners of the first community photojournalism competitions.
The Kalibo Cable Television Inc will air live the Kapehan.
Ariel Cebelinno, of the PPI, said that at 1:00 pm, there will be a Zoom meeting among the participating local councils in the country to discuss among them their activities on World Press Freedom Day.
The AMCC also thanked the sponsors of the said event, which include the Ati-Atihan Festival Hotel, Pizzados, Ariels Point, Cherry and Alex Lechon, Juan’s Bulalohan, Alima Massage, Iyagi Restaurant, Albert Manalo, Ms. Mary Jane Valbuena, and Miss World-Western Visayas, among others.

Kalibonhon leads Miss World Philippines in the UDASS launch KALIBO, Aklan Kalibonhon native now known in this decade as a queen maker, is leading the launch of the Miss World Philippines in the United States of America. Mary Jane Valbuena-Mclelland said that the launch will be staged at the Invincinal Village in Beverly Hills, California, on May 16, 2024. The said event in Philippine time is May 17. “Mclelland Entertainment Production, together with the Miss World Philippines Organization, formally announces the official launch of Miss World Philippines USA! We encourage global pageant fans alike to support Miss World Philippines USA and all our related endeavors,” Mclelland said in her social media post. Mary Jane graduated from high school at Aklan Catholic College. Her daughter, Francesca Beatriz McLelland, is also a finalist for Miss Kalibo Ati-Atihan. The young McLelland in 2022 was named Miss Eco-Teen 2022. She is organizing the US leg through McLelland Entertainment Production and Elite Chateau Inc., the official franchise partner for the Filipino community in the USA. Last year, McLelland held the franchise of Miss World Philippines-Western Visayas. She held the swimsuit competition of the said pageant at the Savoy Hotel-Boracay.
