AKELCO To Hold 41sts AGMA on May 18

LEZO, Aklan- The Aklan Electric Cooperative (AKELCO) is set to hold its annual general membership. Assembly (AGMA) by May 18, 2024.

Atty. Ariel B. Gepty, AKELCO General Manager, said that the 41st AGMA will be held at the ABL Sports Complex in Kalibo, Aklan.

“We are now preparing for it. We anticipate the participation of all member consumers of AKELCO in the province to include Pandan and Libertad towns in Antique,” Gepty said.

Among those to be discussed is the current bid of AKELCO for the renewal of its franchise, which is now being deliberated at the lower house.

Congressman Teodorico Haresco Jr. sponsored the bill and is already due to be discussed at the first reading. If approved, the AKELCO would have another 50 years of franchise as a power cooperative. distributing electricity to the province of Aklan to include Boracay and some towns in Antique.

Another item on the item on the agenda to be discussed is the updates on the penalty charges it requested from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). The AKELCO filed an appeal to the ERC last year to impose two percent surcharge to the late payments of electricity but has yet to be divided by the ERC.

As this develops, officers of the District Member-Consumer Owner Organization (DMCOO) agreed to a resolution on March 20 in a meeting at AKELCO Compound to ask President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. grant perpetual franchise to the power cooperatives all over the country to include AKELCO.

Edgardo Masongsong, the former administrator of the National The Electrification Administration (NEA) urged power cooperatives in Western Visayas to explore investing as a fuel supplier.

“The National Grid Corporations of the Philippines (NGCP) always reported that the Western Visayas region has a slim power reserve against the demands of electricity. If the power cooperatives could invest in it, the better it is for the economy,” he added.
