Most Babies Born in Kalibo; Teenage Pregnancies on the Rise
KALIBO, Aklan โ The number of registered births in Aklan grew by 4.8% in 2023 compared to the previous year, based on data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)โAklan in February 2025.
On average, 21 Aklanon babies were born each day, leading to a crude birth rate of 12.3 per 1,000 populationโjust slightly lower than the national average of 12.8.
The capital town Kalibo recorded 67% of all birth registrations in the province, likely due to its higher population and presence of hospitals and birthing centers.
According to health officials, the rise in births could be attributed to easier access to health services and more complete reporting of live births, especially in municipal health offices and hospitals.
Teenage Births Still a Concern
One notable concern from the report is the number of teenage mothers. In 2023, 663 babies were born to mothers under the age of 19.
โThis trend in adolescent pregnancies highlights the need for stronger reproductive health education and services, especially in the barangays,โ said a local nurse from a rural health unit.
Shift in National Trend
In past years, birth rates in the Philippines were higher, ranging from 15 to 17 per 1,000 people. Experts say the drop in birth rates is due to improved reproductive health programs, changing lifestyles, and better awareness about family planning.
However, the increase in the actual number of registered births in Aklan signals the need for local governments to keep investing in maternal health, youth programs, and economic planning in rural areas.
Call for Local Action
With more babies being born and a growing population, LGUs are urged to improve access to health services, especially for young mothers and families in far-flung communities.
โPopulation growth brings both opportunity and responsibility. We need to make sure services grow with the people,โ said a municipal official.
