Every August, we observe Psoriasis Action Month โ€” a global campaign to raise awareness about a condition that is more than skin deep. As a pediatrician, I have cared for young patients struggling with psoriasis, and Iโ€™ve seen the pain that doesnโ€™t just come from the skin โ€” but from being misunderstood, judged, or excluded.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes red, scaly, and often itchy skin lesions. It affects not only the skin, but also a personโ€™s mental and social well-being. In the Philippines, up to 2.4% of the population is affected by psoriasis, according to local research โ€” thatโ€™s more than 2 million Filipinos.

Yet despite this number, many still suffer in silence, misunderstood even by their closest communities.

The Silent Struggle Behind the Flare-Ups

Psoriasis is not contagious โ€” and yet many people living with it are treated as if they carry something to be feared. Iโ€™ve spoken to young patients who cover themselves with jackets in the heat, skip social gatherings, or avoid school altogether โ€” not because of pain, but because of shame.

The reality is: the biggest scars arenโ€™t always visible. People with psoriasis are at greater risk for depression, anxiety, and low self-worth, especially if they lack support and understanding from those around them.

Our Role as Family, Friends, and Community

This Psoriasis Action Month, I urge everyone โ€” parents, teachers, friends, and community leaders โ€” to take part in this movement for awareness and compassion.

We must:
โ€ข Educate ourselves and break the myths. Psoriasis is a lifelong condition, but it can be managed with medical care and emotional support.
โ€ข Listen to those who are living with it. Understand their struggles and help create safe spaces where they can thrive without hiding.
โ€ข Support families who are navigating the emotional and financial burdens of treatment.
โ€ข Advocate for public health programs that include psoriasis education, access to dermatologic care, and mental health support.

Letโ€™s Build a Kinder Community

In clinics and communities across Aklan and beyond, let us be reminded that psoriasis is not a choice โ€” but kindness is.

We can all do our part by replacing stigma with understanding, fear with knowledge, and silence with support. Let August be more than a month of awareness โ€” let it be the start of a movement toward compassionate care for those with chronic skin conditions.

Because every person deserves to live with dignity โ€” not despite their skin, but regardless of it.
